Course Summary
This online course is designed for high school juniors in Ms. Yu’s integrated ELA/ ENL class. The goal of this course is to help students enhance their skills as a reader and writer and be better prepared for high-stake tests. To illustrate, students in this course will be reading poems, stories and non-fictional passages while they foster habits of an active reader and develop deep understanding of important literary concepts. On the other hand, students will be sharpening their skills as a writer when they engage in various writing assignments: descriptive, narrative, expository and persuasive.
Also integrated in this course are important skills students need to master to tackle the high-stake tests, including the English Regents Exam and SAT. Specifically speaking, students will be building their knowledge of the English language (vocabulary & grammar) as well as knowledge of the structure and requirements of the different high stake tests.
The first unit of the course is about poetry, life and literary analysis. There are 5 modules in unit 1. Many students consider poetry is challenging. However, if you understand the apply the strategies introduced in this unit, with practice, you will become better at understanding and interpreting poetry. Let's give things a try!
