In this course, Effective Means of Discussing Texts, students will understand the importance of discussing readings with peers. Discussion is one of the most important learning activities in any class. It allows students time to listen to their classmates about important topics related to the reading, open themselves up to new perspectives, and make connections between the text and points made during the discussion. Focusing on high school and college ages, students will learn what an effective discussion includes, different means of conducting a discussion, discussing both fiction and non-fiction, the challenges that face effective discussions, and how to prepare for and run their own discussion of a text of their choosing. From these course activities, students will take with them the ability to participate and facilitate a variety of different text-based discussions.
