Building a Classroom for Students with Autism

If you have never worked with children with autism in a school setting, it may be a lot to take in and attempt to understand. Though some aspects of a classroom for students with autism are similar to a typical general education classroom, there are some characteristics that are important to include in an autism classroom in order for students to be successful. In this course, we will be discussing a variety of topics that will help teachers run a successful classroom for students with autism.

Some topics to be discussed include:

*Incorporating alternate forms of communication throughout parts of a students day

*The importance of schedules and planning in a students transitions throughout the day

*Behavior and classroom management, and the importance of positive reinforcement

*The overall structure of a classroom and allowing independence

This course is focused on developing teacher's skills in working with students with autism in a classroom setting (grades K-6).
