Welcome 8th graders, to the home of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme Community Project! The purpose of this course and project is to engage students in self-directed inquiry and the demonstration of responsible action as IB students and global citizens. During the length of this course, students will create, conduct, reflect upon, and present a community service-based project of their own personal interest. Students will brainstorm a topic, apply an IB Global Context, conduct research, spend at least 15 hours engaging in service-learning, reflect upon their experience via journaling, and present their project to peers, staff, parents, and members of the community. Students may work individually or in groups of up to 3 students. Students will work with a teacher mentor throughout the process and will be required to participate in regular check-ins. By completing this course and project, students will gain a better understanding of themselves as learners and their role in helping to shape our global community.
