This course, Dramatic literature, is designed to introduce students to a wide variety of plays and allow them to assess their understanding of the literature through a wide range of activities including discussion, recorded responses, close-readings, and opportunities for reflection. Most importantly, students will be presented with the opportunity to experience theatre and unpack its translation from text to stage while they explore and interpret the literature with an emphasis on how and why the playwright made specific choices. A selection of scenes will be considered including dramas by playwrights Henrik Ibsen, Tennessee Williams, and a variety of articles. Throughout the semester students will delve into character development and cultural context impacted by their own research to influence their understanding and interpretation of the plays.
