In fourth grade historical fiction unit, students will be learning about World War II through the book Number the Stars. Students will read through the lens of a ten-year-old girl, Annemarie, who lived during the height of the Nazi invasion in Copenhagen, Denmark. Annemarie and her family have to shelter her next door neighbor, and very best friend Ellen, a Jew, from the Nazis. Students will learn to analyze text, synthesize narratives from different characters, compare and contrast themes and learn how to incorporate nonfiction research into their reading. All material had been adapted from Lucy Calkin's Unit of Studies, Fourth Grade Historical Fiction Book Clubs Curriculum.
