This course is a comprehensive introduction to Canada. We will be conducting an introductory exploration into the country's history, people, politics, and geography, and how these shape Canadian culture and identity. We will learn about the country through a historical and anthropological lens, with theory, data, and artifacts, including narratives and other media. The course will be presented in both thematically and chronologically where applicable, examining how each period in history has shaped our neighbo(u)rs to the north and America's (and other nations') relationship with them.

Upon completion of this course, students will have the ability to identify and explain important cultural nuances and political differences between Canada and the United States, to explain the most prominent ideological issues in Canadian politics and current affairs and describe the historical factors that are the root causes of those issues, and to draw from a fundamental encyclopedic knowledge of the country, including being able to accurately identify and characterize the country given general images, maps, demographic data, or other artifacts.

This course is appropriate for students interested in North American history, public policy and administration, political science, international affairs, and cultural anthropology of western civilizations.
