Fourth graders participating in this course will work to build their literacy skills including reading comprehension and writing skills to work toward proficiency. Students will work with both fiction and nonfiction texts at the fourth grade level. Lessons taught are aligned to the New York State Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards.

- making inferences
- supporting analytical thinking with specific examples from the text
- compare and contrast
- point of view
- summarize information
- interpret information from charts, timelines, and diagrams
- writing a structured paragraph with topic sentence, supporting details, and closing sentence
